A Knock at the Door

A Knock at the Door

We recently restored an old dining room table that belonged to my grandmother, and likely her father before that. It’s old, and it looks it, but I was drawn to its character. So many memories were shared around that table from generations past, and I want to add memories for many more years to come.

Dining Room Table

Our women’s Bible study has been working through Kristi Mclelland’s “The Gospel on the Ground,” a study of the early church in Acts. One of the biggest themes from this week was fellowship.

“Table fellowship was a way to participate in and celebrate the restoration, renewal, and repair of the world. It still is.”

- Kristi Mclelland

Sitting at a table together with others opens the door for opportunities to share. Our stories. Our hearts. Our prayers.

And I was feeling convicted. Because I hadn’t invited anyone over to our home since getting our new (old) dining room table.

That night I prayed to God for opportunity. “Please, Lord, give us opportunities to share the blessings you’ve given us with others. I will set the table, Lord. Please help to fill it.”

Opportunity literally came knocking at my front door at 7:30 the next morning. It was the neighbor boy who asked for a ride to school. It would be about 45 minutes until we left, so he came in and sat at the table to wait.

Never underestimate how quickly and powerfully God can answer your prayers.

That morning, I took the neighbor and my boys to school. On the way, our friend asked, “So is this what it's like every morning for you guys?”

“Yes,” I replied.

“Well, I guess I’ll be coming with you guys every day then,” he said with a big grin.

I look forward to seeing what God has in store for this young man's life and how we can be a part of it.

Won't you pray with me?

Dear Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the opportunities You place before us, often in the most unexpected ways. We pray for the wisdom and discernment to recognize these moments when they come knocking at our door. May our hearts be open, our tables be set, and our lives be ready to welcome others and share Your love with them.

In Jesus' name, I pray,

Amen.
